utility building Brzeg

Address
Brzeg, Kępa Młyńska

Location

The packing department building, which is a part of the former mill complex in Brzeg, is a typical example of 19th century post-industrial architecture.

Together with the production building, the turbine house and the canal feeding the turbine, it is a material testimony of the former industrial complex once linked spatially and functionally.

History of the structure

The present packing department, also known as the finished products warehouse, like the turbine house, was built in 1889 during the reconstruction of the mill’s main production building after a fire. According to sources - originally there was a second mill located in this place. Probably it was the Słodowy mill, existing at the Mostowy mill since the beginning of the 15th century.

Description of the structure

The building is an integral part of the former mill complex. It was located in the north-western part of Kępa Młyńska, with the turbine house adjacent on the southern elevation. It is a brick structure, not plastered, built on a rectangular floor plan, topped with a gable roof with a slight slope. The whole of the four-storey cuboid block is stylistically uniform, referring in its structure and form to the main production building. The western elevation is characterized by a symmetrical, four-axis division, with a pair of rectangular strip windows on each axis. The gable elevation is divided by three axes with a similar layout of window openings, at the level of the second and third storey. Below, the central axis is marked by a blind window closed with a segmental arch, and on the ground floor there is a centrally located entrance opening in the form of a rectangular gate. The modest architectural decoration is accented by brick pinnacles in the corners of the gables and a simple under eaves frieze surrounding the building. In the interior, noticeable ceilings and roof construction characterized by a simple wooden structure, with little bearing capacity. From the old, historical furnishings, sack slides have been preserved.
