settlement Brzezina

Address
Brzezina

Location
woj. opolskie, pow. brzeski, gm. Skarbimierz

The settlement in Brzezina, used and inhabited in the 3rd - 4th century A.D.by the people of the Przeworsk culture is an archaeological relic that informs contemporaries about the prehistory of Silesia.

It is an important material source broadening our knowledge on ancient settlements in the Brzeg region.

History of the structure

The site was discovered in 1985 during surface research carried out

as part of the Archaeological Picture of Poland (AZP) by the researcher Dr Marek Bednarek from the Institute of Archaeology of the University of Wrocław. Surface exploration allows to determine the chronology of the site at the end of the Roman period.

Description of the structure

Location of the monument: the site is located on the terraces of the Odra valley, on the western side of the road to Lipki, about 600 m north (with an incline to the east) of the village church, about 1800 m west of the Odra riverbed. Perhaps in ancient and medieval times the above-mentioned road was a track leading along the edge of the valley, which led the trade route on the western side of the Odra river, from Opole, near the hillfort in Lipki, to Wrocław, through an area which was then covered by forest.

Description of the site: the settlement is located on arable fields and wastelands, on the western side of the road from Brzeg to Lipki, spreading on a slightly elevated sandy terrace descending towards the Odra valley, on plots no 180/2-14 and 181/1-8. The area has been partially developed. Relics of the prehistoric settlement lie beneath the arable layer. Archaeological artifacts were discovered on the surface of the fields.

Progress and findings of archaeological research: archaeological site - a settlement, discovered in 1985 as part of the Archaeological Picture of Poland research. A surface penetration of the fields was carried out by Dr M. Bednarek and his students, and the research query was conducted by Prof. S. Pazda of the University of Wrocław. Dozens of fragments of clay vessels were found in the field. On the basis of the artefacts discovered, Prof. Stanisław Pazda determined that the settlement was used by the people of the Przeworsk culture in the late Roman period (phase C and D). Archaeological artifacts were discovered on the surface of the fields. The site was probably disturbed by deep ploughing in the post-war years and partially developed in the 1920s.

Visitor access. The site is located on private land. The area is open to the general public.
