The park belongs to the largest landscape complexes in the region.

It was funded by duchess Dorothea de Talleyrand-Périgord and the design is attributed to an outstanding garden designer - Peter Joseph Lenne.

History

The first decorative garden in Zatonie was created in the 18th century at a Baroque manor house erected in the years 1685-1689 by Balthasar von Unruh. Neither the size, nor the arrangement of that complex are known. What we know is that in 1840 a flowered courtyard was located in front of the building’s front façade and a garden with flowers passing into a meadow and a forest was found at the back. In the years 1842-1843, upon Duchess Dorothea de Talleyrand-Périgord command, to whom the estate belonged from 1809 onwards, the manor house was redesigned and obtained a form of a Classicist palace. More or less at the same time the works on shaping the vast landscape park around the residence began. Possibly, the author of the design or a design adviser was Peter Joseph Lenne. After extension, the park occupied the surface area of approx. 32 ha. A flower garden adorned with two fountains was located in front of the palace, the orangery and the greenhouse adjoining the palace at its east end. The main part of the park stretched to the north and further to the east of the residence. A central part was occupied by a vast Johanna’s Meadow. At its east end, a gazebo sat on a view mound. A stone grotto was dug in the elevation; next to it, there was a small pond. A pond with the Maria Island was located in the western part of the park. In 1871 Duke Alexander Edmund de Talleyrand-Périgord modified the orangery and the greenhouse, while before 1905 the subsequent owner, Renate von Lancken-Wakenitz, extended the park by a forest with a surface area of 18 ha. Most probably a lime alley at the southern border of the park was planted at that time as well. In 1945 the palace, the orangery and the greenhouses burned down - they have remained a ruin to this day. The park was taken over by the State Forests. In 2017 a park revitalisation design was prepared.

Description

The park is located in the heart of the village, on the eastern side of the Zielona Góra-Kożuchów road. It stretches on the area of 52 ha along the local road running to Niedoradz. The main entrance is located in front of the church ruins. From there, a lime alley - the main route of the complex - runs to the east through the entire park. The western part hosts the preserved ruins of the Renaissance Revival palace and the adjacent orangery and greenhouse. Remnants of fountains are found on the axis of the front façade and the orangery. A vast, elongated clearing (Johanna’s Meadow) with a solitary oak specimen is located on the north side, on the east-west axis. To the east of the palace, there is a mound with the remnants of a gazebo and a preserved stone grotto at its foot. Native deciduous trees prevail in the tree stands: pedunculate oaks, small-leaved limes, common hornbeams, common beeches and maples. Beeches of three varieties ‘Asplenifolia’, ‘Pendula’ and ‘Atropunicea’ distinguish themselves with particular decorative values. The artificially introduced trees include white chestnuts, red oaks and a few specimens of pin oak and scarlet oak. The park undergrowth deserves particular attention - nearly the entire western part of it is overgrown with wild garlic and fumewort. The eastern part of the park features a lot more coniferous trees.

Heritage site accessible to the general public.
