The Parish Church of St.Adalbert in Konin-Morzysław is an example of a brick rural church erected at the beginning of the 20th century in the eastern Wielkopolska region, which was under the rule of the Russian Empire.

History of the structure

Morzysław was mentioned for the first time in 1326 as a royal village. In 1564, the village was part of the estate of the Konin starost; in 1579, it was the property of Jan from Służew, the starost of Konin and the Governor of Brześć. In 1827, it became the property of the Kingdom of Poland under the rule of the Russian Empire. In 1967 the village of Morzysław was incorporated into the town of Konin. The original traces of Konin settlement are located in the nearby village of Stare Miasto. In 1283, for defensive reasons, Konin was moved to its present location on the left bank of the Warta River. The town obtained municipal rights in 1293 and in the mid- 14th century became the seat of the district. In the following centuries the town developed thanks to crafts until the 17th century, when it lost its importance. A renewed development took place in the second half of the 19th century, and then after World War II in connection with the development of metallurgical industry (aluminium steelworks) and opencast lignite mining.

The first wooden church of St. Adalbert was mentioned in 1419. In 1785, parish priest Andrzej Liszkowski erected a new brick church, which was rebuilt in 1884 by Rev. Canon Stanisław Chmielewski. The present neo-Baroque church of St. Adalbert was built in place of the old one in 1905-1914. In 1981 the roofing was replaced from tile to sheet metal. In the years 1996-1999 it was thoroughly renovated, e.g. its elevations and interior were painted. In 1998, a pre-burial chapel was erected to the south of the church.

Description of the structure

The Church of St. Adalbert in Konin-Morzysław is located on the bank of the Warta river, approximately 3 km from the centre of the town. The oriented church was built of brick on a rectangular floor plan and plastered. Adjoining the nave are side chapels of equal height on the south and north sides, forming the arms of a transept, and on the east side - the chancel with a pentagonal apse and rectangular annexes housing the parish hall on the north and the sacristy on the south. A three-storey tower with a porch in the ground floor, adjoined by two vestibules, topped with a pyramidal cupola with a cross on top, is adjacent to the western elevation of the nave. The western part of the nave is flanked by two small chapels built on a square floor plan, which are accessible from the interior. The nave and side chapels are covered with gable roofs, the chancel with a multi-pitched roof, and the sacristy and the parish hall with single-pitched roofs. The interior of the church in the part of the single five-bay nave, chancel, northeastern and south-eastern chapels is covered with double-barrel vaults on the arches flowing down on the pilasters, while in the part of the sacristy, parish hall and north-western and south-western chapels there are cross-ribbed vaults. The side chapels forming the transept open onto the nave with semicircular arcades. The western part of the nave is closed by a brick choir gallery with a pipe organ, supported by two polygonal pillars.

To the southwest of the church stands a brick two-storey bell tower with three contemporary bells. A magnificent pre-burial chapel is located south of it. The church is surrounded by a brick and metal fence with a decorative gate in its western part and a small gate in the eastern part.

Visitor access: The church is open to visitors from the outside.
