town hall Baborów

Address
Baborów, Ratuszowa 2

Location
woj. opolskie, pow. głubczycki, gm. Baborów - miasto

The town hall in Baborów, originally a former manor house built in the early 19th century, is of historical importance to the residents of Baborów, being one of the most important public buildings in the town.

History of the structure

The first mention of the existence of a town hall in Baborów dates back to 1783. It was then located in a private house. As is known from source materials, in the second half of the 18th century, when Baborów was granted new rights and the town was administered by a mayor and magistrates’ college, a collection for funds to build a new town hall was organized. However, the Napoleonic wars prevented the realization of the project. The plans did not come to fruition until 1856, when the town bought the manor house from the Machat family (then owners of the Baborów estate), which was probably built after the secularization of the Dominican convent in 1810. The building was rebuilt and transformed into a town hall in 1863-71, a year later a small tower with a clock was added. It was damaged by a Soviet air raid in 1945. The roofing was replaced with zinc sheeting in the 1990s. Currently it is partly used by public benefit associations.

Description of the structure

The town hall is located in the middle of the western strip of the mid-market development. It is situated front-gabled, with its facade facing Dąbrowszczaków Street from the west. On the eastern side there is a building adjacent to the former town hall, which is the seat of the city authorities, and on the northern side it is surrounded by a parking lot. It was erected on a rectangular floor plan along the east-west longitudinal axis. It has a basement, two-stories, a usable attic, and an attic, covered with a gable roof with a gable over the rear elevation. Above the façade rises a small turret on a square plan, the diagonal of which coincides with the roof ridge. It is covered with a dome on steel posts. The town hall was built of brick and plastered. A smooth, plastered pedestal runs around the building to the ground floor level. The front elevation is characterized by a symmetrical five-axis division with the main entrance framed by pilasters and preceded by a stone and concrete staircase. The slightly broken cornice above the level of the first storey forms an additional crowning part of pilasters in the form of capitals. The axes are marked with rectangular double-sided window openings, framed by plastered surrounds. On the side of the northern elevation there is an entrance to the basement. Two-bay interior layout, partially transformed, with a corridor in the middle of the routes. Inside, there are barrel vaults (the cellar, the corridor and the ground floor) and cross vaults.

Visitor access: The monument is open to visitors.
