The palace and park complex in Dąbrówka Wielkopolska was designed by a well-known German architect, Friedrich August Stüler, a disciple and collaborator of Karl Friedrich Schinkel.

The complex is widely recognised as outstanding in terms of its architectural features. The palace architecture is an interesting combination of elements belonging to the English Tudor and the German Renaissance styles.

History

The palace in Dąbrówka Wielkopolska was erected in the years 1856-1859 for baron Albert Strein von Schwarzenau-Dammer. The design of the building was prepared by Friedrich August Stüler, a disciple and collaborator of Karl Friedrich Schinkel. In the years 1877-1878 alteration works took place, commissioned by baroness Schwarzenau and covering the redesigning of the décor and façade decorations. Later, an orangery erected on a wide terrace on the south side and a representational porte-cochère were removed. In the 1930s, hen the estate belonged to Bernard von Britzke, a youth shelter and later a school were arranged in the palace. Today, the house remains property of the Zbąszynek Commune.

Description

The palace and park complex is situated in the central part of the village, west of the main road and preceded by a pond. To the west of the residence, there is a park with an area of 1.6 ha. On the other sides, there are village buildings. At first, on the north side, a manor farm was situated. The palace was erected in the Renaissance Revival style, combining elements of the Tudor and the German Renaissance styles. It is made of brick, set on a rectangular floor plan, features octagonal towers at the corners and has a compact, two-storey body covered with a hip roof. Four-storey towers are surmounted with tented roofs. The plastered façades are accentuated with a rhythm of bay windows with a triforium partition, framed by pilasters and columns featuring richly decorated semi-circular arches as well as string courses and a crowning cornice resting on corbels. The central axis on the front façade and the garden-facing façade was accentuated with a three-axial faux avant-corps, crowned in the roof section with a tall dormer, additionally adorned with the coat of arms of the von Schwarzenau family on the front façade. The main entrance is preceded by a porch, upon which rests a balcony. The interior layout has been distorted by contemporary rearrangements. The towers include vaults with stellar ornamentation and corbels adorned with busts. In its main part, the park was arranged as a landscape one exhibiting a single-space composition. In the north and west part, it transforms into a forest park with a freer arrangement, including a small elevation - the so-called Adelaide Mountain. A family graveyard was situated in this part. Such a solution indicates links to the style adopted by P. J. Lenné. The tree stands feature maples and oaks as dominating species.

The site is accessible to the general public. It can be visited by prior telephone arrangement.
