The parish church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary is a valuable example of wooden sacral architecture in southern Wielkopolska.

Erected in 1785, it has preserved its shape and original furnishings. Noteworthy are the Rococo altars and polychrome from 1929 made by Professor Wiktor Gosieniecki.

History of the structure

The oldest references to the parish in Ociąż come from the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries. The first wooden church was built in 1434. After its destruction, the temple was rebuilt in 1698 by parish priest A. Cichawski and the then successor Lutomirski. The present wooden church was erected after a fire in 1785. It was built on the site of the previous church on the initiative of the patron (Morawski?) and parishioners. In 1927 the church was thoroughly renovated. The interior of the church was plastered. The church was significantly expanded. On the west side the nave was extended, the main and two side entrances and the choir and organ gallery were added, and on the south side a brick sacristy was built. In 1929 the interior of the church was covered with polychrome, which was made by Prof. Wiktor Gosieniecki from Kraków. Renovation of the polychrome in 1959 was done by M. Poznański. Further repairs were carried out: in 1980 the shingles on the roof were replaced and larch panelling was laid inside the church, in 1999 the towers were covered with copper sheets, in 2001 the roof truss was restored, in 2001/02 the polychrome was renovated, in 2006/07 the windows and exterior wall panelling were replaced. Next to the church there is a wooden bell tower from 1804, which was moved and thoroughly restored in 1948.

Description of the structure

Ociąż village is located 10 km to the north-east from Ostrów Wielkopolski. The parish church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary is located in the western part of the village, on the site of a former cemetery. On the north-western side there is a wooden bell tower. The complex is surrounded by a brick fence.

An oriented church, built on a rectangular floor plan with a chancel closed on three sides. A brick tomb chapel of Wanda Tyszkiewiczowa is adjacent to the chancel wall on the north, and a brick sacristy on the south. The main nave of the church is covered with a gable roof, the lower chancel with a three-hipped roof. Separate roofs over the sacristy - single-pitched and on the western side over the porch - multi-pitched. All roofs are covered with wood shingles. The whole is dominated by a ridge turret topped with an openwork lantern with a bulbous cupola covered with sheet metal.

The building has a wooden log structure; the walls are covered with weatherboards. The western gable, boarded in a herringbone pattern, is framed by decorative panels. In the finial of the gable is a wooden cross from the 18th century. The window openings and door portals are preserved in their original profiled frames.

Inside the church, flat ceilings with crown mouldings decorated with a plafond with medallions, painted coffers and geometric motifs. In the western part of the nave there is a music gallery with a balustrade, supported on four decorative pillars.

The church furnishing includes three altars from the late 18th century made in Rococo style. In the main altar there is a painting of the Virgin Mary signed A.S 1637.

Visitor access. The site can be accessed from the outside. Visiting the church inside is possible by prior telephone arrangement. More information, including the Holy Mass schedule, is available on the parish website.
