Manor and park complex

manor house 19th century Lubiec

Address
Lubiec

Location
woj. łódzkie, pow. bełchatowski, gm. Szczerców

An example of Classicist architecture.

History

According to the local tradition, there was initially a “fortified castle” on the little island on the pond. This hypothesis is indirectly confirmed by archaeological surveys. Based on its findings, it has been established that a settlement on this site existed as early as the 16th century.  In all likelihood, the first manor house was wooden (there are no surviving remnants of the building from the 16th century) and was subsequently replaced with a brick one. Some parts of the walls in the cellars are thicker than other parts and differ with the used building material, which suggests that these may be the remnants of the earlier building.

However, the above hypotheses need to be verified on the basis of comprehensive architectural and archaeological research.

The present-day manor house was built by Marceli Sulimierski in 1836. The Sulimierski family owned the Lubiec estate from the beginning of the 19th century to 1911, when it came into the ownership of the Arkuszewski family. After the end of the Second World War, the building housed a State Agricultural Farm. Since the 1970s, it has been used for educational purposes. At present, it houses a primary school.

Description

The manor house stands on an island on a pond. It is surrounded by a park of historical significance. From the east, the complex adjoins a fish pond. From the south, it borders with the main road to the village, leading from Łask to Szczerców.

It is a one-storey building, cellared, with a habitable attic. It was built on a rectangular plan with an annex from the west. The building is covered with a four-hipped roof.

The manor house is made of brick. It has wooden ceilings, whereas the cellars have a segmented ceiling. The roof is clad with sheet metal.

The front elevation faces south. It is seven-axial and symmetrical. In its central part, there is a recessed portico with four Tuscan columns, a triglyph frieze and a dentil cornice. Above the portico, there is an attic, topped with a triangular gable.  The garden-facing (northern) elevation incorporates a shallow, three-axial avant-corps adorned with pilasters. Just as in the façade, it is topped with an attic On the ground level, there is a spacious terrace with stairs leading to the garden.

The western elevation is adjoined by a rectangular one-storey annex containing an entrance to the building. In the tree-axial eastern elevation, there is a door with stairs leading to the cellars.

The corners of all the elevations, the portico and the avant-corps are accentuated with quoins. All the elevations are topped with a stepped cornice. The prominent plinth is an important element of the architectural composition.

The main entrance in the southern elevation leads to the hall, behind which there is a staircase. Behind the staircase, there is the former lounge. The division into rooms in the eastern and western parts results from secondary alterations.

The building can be viewed from outside all year round. It can be visited inside upon prior arrangement with the school headmaster.
