A half-shell fortified tower with a fragment of town walls was erected in the second quarter of the  14th century in the Gothic style.

The buildings located on the west side of the Old Town represent valuable relics of the medieval town fortifications.

History

The oldest form of settlement in Dobiegniew was a hillfort, the location of which has yet to be determined. In the second quarter of the 14th century the town was circumscribed by walls that replaced an earlier palisade. The fortified town obtained a shape of an irregular hexagon. The line of defensive walls includes 37 half-shell fortified towers on each side, except for the north part adjacent to the lake. Additionally, a tower set on a quadrilateral floor plan, passing into a cylindrical upward extension, was located in the south-west corner. We also know that the line of walls included two gates: the Upper (High) one and the Lower (Low) one, plus two wicket gates: the one facilitating access to the lake and the other on the river, leading to a mill. Due to their uselessness in the light of development of modern means of combat and changes in the war tactics, the town fortifications began to be gradually dismantled in the early modern era. When it comes to Dobiegniew, the town wallsand gates began to be demolished in the 18th and the 19th century. Only a half-shell fortified tower made of bricks with a section of the wall has survived to our times. At the turn of the 20th century, a residential building was added on the east side of the structure. In 2008 conservation works were carried out at the fortified tower, consisting in reinforcing the foundations and wall finials. In 2010, among others, the wall was upgraded, joined and cleaned, while cavities were filled with missing bricks. The preserved fortifications constitute an important element of the defensive architecture located in the Lubusz Land.

The half-shell fortified tower with a section of the town wall in Dobiegniew is situated at the intersection of Zabytkowa and Wyszyńskiego streets. A fragment of the town wall and partially the fortified tower wall adjoin a residential building at 1 Zabytkowa Street. On the side of the street, it is separated with a low metal fence. The fortified tower with a fragment of the town wall rests on a stone footing. The ground floor features a stone plinth made of pebbles laid on a limestone mortar. Above, the building is made of medieval bricks in the Gothic style, using a monk bond on a limestone mortar. Certain sections also include 19th-century machine-made bricks laid on a cement mortar. The fortified tower was erected on an quadrilateral floor plan and is 8 metres tall. On the north side, it includes a fragment of the municipal wall that is 3 metres tall. The fortified tower features narrow embrasures on two storeys as seen from the internal - west - side. Additionally, the south wall includes two embrasures. Moreover, the interior of the building features a row of niches of a different width on three levels, terminating in a pointed arch. The presented fortified tower with a fragment of the tower wall is one of the oldest heritage sites of Dobiegniew, thus enriching the tourist offer of the Strzelce-Drezdenko District.

The site is a property of the Municipal Office. The building is adequately exposed in the urban space and open to the public.
