Address
Cieszków, Ludwika Waryńskiego 8

Location

A manorial church designed in the Rococo style, featuring an elaborate yet tasteful design and a stylistically uniform interior décor.

History

The funds for the construction of the church were provided by Katarzyna Ludwiga née Sapieha, her intention being to build a manorial chapel for her family. The construction was launched in 1753 or 1756, with the new building replacing an earlier, wooden church. The design of the church is attributed to Karol Martin Frantz, whose inspiration were reportedly the works of the Dientzenhofer family, whose members were renowned architects from Bohemia. The works were conducted by two master brickmasons – Joseph Pöltz from Wrocław and Leopold Ostritz from Trzebnica.

Description

The Cieszków church is a single-nave structure, its layout being a mixture of a central and longitudinal plan, featuring a dome rising above the middle bay, supported by pillars bound together by a series of arches. The chancel bay is narrower than the nave and features a semi-circular apse which houses the altarpiece as well as quadrangular annexes containing the chapel of the Our Lady of Częstochowa and the sacristy, with galleries positioned directly above. The western bay is adjoined by symmetrical, square annexes as well as the western section of the church, which houses the vestibule and the pipe organ gallery. The front façade is an impressive, ornate design flanked by a pair of towers with double-pitched cupolas. The front façade pediment incorporates a sculpted cartouche with the coat of arms of the noble family whose members founded the church. The interior furnishings are designed in a uniform Rococo style and date back to approx. 1755. There is also an epitaph plaque commemorating the church’s founder, Katarzyna Ludwika Sapieha, first married surname Michałowa Sapieżyna, second married surname von Lilienhoff, who died in 1779 and was buried in the crypt below.

Limited access to the historical monument.
