Location and description
The hill fort (so-called Castle Peak [Góra Zamkowa]) is located in the former meander of the Obra river, currently floodplains of the power plant near Bledzew, and occupies a triangular promontory descending steeply towards the floodplains. The area is wooded and administered by the National Forest Holding.
The site in Grądzkie is a concave triangular emplacement surrounded by waters of the Obra river from three sides, and separated from the other part of the promontory with a rampart and a ditch from the fourth side.
History
The hillfort in Grądzkie was built in early Middle Ages and was in use between the 7th and the 10th century. A fragment of a hand-formed vessel as well as pieces of vessels rounded at the top, including 9 weakly profiled edges, as well as an edge fragment of a wholly-rounded vessel, were found within the site.
Condition and results of archaeological research
The hillfort was penetrated during surface surveys in the course of which, in 1957, the fragments of early medieval ceramics referred to above were collected. Most probably, the site has not been subject to excavations. During World War II, it was partially destroyed by German trenches. On the peak of the hillfort, there are surviving fragments of an unknown stone building.
The hillfort is accessible all year round, but it is difficult to access it through the forest due to the lack of surface roads in the vicinity. Its foot can be reached by water from Bledzew, through Bledzewski Lagoon.
