A fine example of Gothic ecclesiastical architecture, typical for the region.

History

The church was erected in the first half of the 14th century.

Description

It is located in the northern part of the village of Chełmonie, on a site surrounded by a perimeter wall. The church, designed in the Gothic style with certain Gothic Revival features added during its restoration, is accompanied by a bell tower. The walls of the church are made of brick arranged in the so-called Gothic bond; it was designed on a rectangular floor plan and features a four-bay main body with a distinct chancel, likewise rectangular in shape and adjoined by a sacristy. Each individual section of the church features a separate gable roof clad with beaver tail roof tiles arranged in a lace pattern. A Gothic Revival porch adjoins the southern side of the building. Inside, the Gothic Revival ceilings follow the shape of the gable roof above and feature partially exposed roof truss. The façades of the church feature a pronounced wall base, their lower sections adorned with zigzag patterns of overburnt brick. In addition, putlock holes can also still be seen in the walls of the church. The upper section of the walls is punctuated with an alternating arrangement of window openings and blind windows, all of them topped with pointed arches and framed with surrounds made of roll-mouldings. The eastern wall takes the form of a stepped gable adorned with pointed-arch blind windows. Exposed toothings can still be seen projecting from the wall. The sacristy gable is likewise triangular in shape, adorned by four pointed-arch blind windows separated by diagonally positioned lesenes topped with pyramid-shaped finials. The western façade likewise features a triangular gable and features an archivolt entrance portal in the centre, above which rises a semi-circular blind window flanked by a pair of pointed-arch ones. The interior fixtures and fittings date back mostly to the 17th and 18th-century; notable items include a 16th-century crucifix, a Renaissance baptismal font, a Mannerist main altarpiece and a pair of Rococo side altarpiece as well as a Baroque Pietà.

Property of the parish - the structure can be viewed from the outside.
