The Knights Tower is of historical value as a relic of Bystrzyca Kłodzka city fortifications and an example of such city defensive structures.

Historia

Bystrzyca Kłodzka was surrounded by a single ring of city walls at the beginning of the 14th century. Within the city walls there was only one tower erected, not connected with the gates, being only a part of the fortification. This is the Knights Tower in Knights Street, also known as the Black, Raven or Butcher’s Tower. The latter name was probably given to it due to the fact that the guild of butchers took care of it. The Knights Tower was built in the 14th century (?). It is similar to the Kłodzko Gate Tower. In 1609 it was covered with a stone-built, pyramidal, polygonal cupola. In 1730s it was crenellated. Already in the 1820s, the Knight Tower, according to the design of Karl Friedrich Schinkel was envisaged to be a bell tower for the Evangelical church. In 1843 it was adapted for this purpose. Its upper floor was converted into a bell chamber. Neo-Romanesque bifora and new entrance opening were made. The tower is topped with a profiled brick cornice. In the early 20th century it was non-plastered, with a helmet covered with sheet metal. The tower was renovated in 2013.

Opis

The Knights Tower is located on the axis of Rycerska Street, at its north-eastern end. Built of stone, with brick alterations, non- plastered.  Erected on a square floor plan. Five-storey, topped with a profiled brick crowning cornice. The façades have openings arranged axially. In the elevation from the side of Rycerska Street (south-western) there is a rectangular entrance, above it, a pointed Gothic opening in a stone frame. At the fifth storey, neo-Romanesque bifora with pointed arch windows in brick, stepped frames. Similar bifora in the remaining façades of the bell chamber. In addition, the façade from Rycerska Street side contains remnants of stone supports for the porch and balcony. The façade from Wojska Polskiego Street side (northeastern) has slot windows with stone frames. The tower is covered with a helmet, nowadays covered with sheet metal.

The site is accessible all year round.
