An outstanding unique example of a wooden centralised church on a national scale, featuring neoclassical forms which are a reminiscent of the brick and stone monumental architecture, designed probably by Jakub Kubicki, a renowned architect of the Enlightenment.

History

The church was founded by Kazimierz Krasiński, Grand Camp Leader of the Crown and governor (starost) of the Krasnystaw district, heir to the estates of Żulin-Borowica, and built between 1797 and 1799. The successive owners of the estates used it as a chapel serviced by the Augustinians of Krasnystaw; in 1921 the church becomes a parish church; from 1947 it serves as a filial church of the parish in Żulin; and from 1988 onwards, it was again granted the status of a parish church. The church has been preserved without alterations; in the 1970s it underwent complete renovation.

Description

The church is situated on a small hill, set away from the local byroad, and surrounded by fields. It was designed in the neoclassical style. This centralised church was built on a square plan with truncated corners, having a Greek cross with similarly truncated corners between its arms inscribed in them. A rectangular sacristy is located behind the chancel on the north side, and a porch was constructed on the south side. It was built of wood in a corner-notched log construction using larch logs on a brick foundation, and covered with weatherboards. The central part features a raised tholobate covered with an eight-faced tented roof and crowned with a cross; shed roofs cover the name; the porch and sacristy are topped with gable roofs clad with shingles. The porch and sacristy are crowned with triangular gable ends; the open-work steeple over the porch is clad with sheet metal. The facades are covered with boards, which were positioned vertically in the form of a plinth in the lower portion of the facades and horizontally in upper portion; the corners are covered with rusticated battens. The porch and sacristy were seemingly rusticated in the fashion of masonry architecture. The body, tholobate and gable ends are surrounded by highly profiled cornices with eaves. The entrance and arms feature semi-circular windows, while the other are rectangular and feature window surrounds. The inner part consists of four niches forming the arms of the Greek cross, adorned with fluted Doric columns supporting the entablature with serrated cornice, which is curried around the entire church; the cornice is topped with an octagonal tholobate supporting the eight-faced ceiling designed so as to create the effect of cupola. Alters are set in three recesses; the southern recess features an overhanging choir gallery; matronea are placed above the ground floor in the truncated corners; and an ambo is separated in the north-western recess. The church fittings date back to the 18th and 19th centuries.

The monument is open to visitors.
