The Parish Cemetery of Divine Providence is one of the most valuable and best preserved complexes of this type in the region.

The complex is valuable due to its clear and unaltered historical layout and its well-preserved, historic graves, being important examples of funerary art from the end of the 19th century and the 1st half of the 20th century on a regional scale. At the same time, it is one of the most important necropolises of the city, in which many eminent and distinguished persons connected with the history of Biała are buried.

History

The establishment of the cemetery is related to the relocation of the previously used, overcrowded cemeteries outside the densely built-up area of the city for sanitary reasons, which operations were carried out from the end of the 18th century. In the case of the parish cemetery, an important factor was also the lack of space for graves for several dozen Bar Confederates killed during fights in Biała, who were eventually buried at a site remote from the parish cemetery, transformed into the present parish cemetery in c. 1790. The original complex, at first contained to the northern part, was subsequently rearranged and enlarged to the south. In the 2nd half of the 19th century, the cemetery, already occupying an L-shaped plan, was enclosed with the preserved brick wall with a tripartite main gate on the Cmentarna Street side. In the late 19th century, arcaded galleries were built in the southern and north-western parts. In the 2nd half of the 20th century, the area of the cemetery was enlarged with the southern part.

Description

The cemetery is located not far to the south-east of the city centre of the historic Biała, in the Lipnik district, by Cmentarna, Dawna, and Zapolska Streets. The complex is situated on an irregular, L-shaped plan consisting of three parts, i.e. the oldest, northern part in the shape of an elongated rectangle, a central part on a trapezium plan, perpendicular to the northern part, and a southern part, extending from the central part. The northern and central parts of the cemetery are surrounded by a brick, plastered wall constructed in the 2nd half of the 19th century, with the tripartite main gate on the north side. Additionally, the site features Neo-Renaissance arcaded galleries sheltering graves, extending along the west border of the northern part of the cemetery and along the south border of the central part. The particular parts of the cemetery are characterised by different spatial arrangements, defined by nets of avenues lined with thujas. In the middle of the main avenue in the northern part, on the axis of the main gate, there is a stone cross commemorating the foundation of the cemetery, dated at the 2nd half of the 19th century. Another cross, dating from the mid-20th century, is located at the intersection of avenues in the southern part of the cemetery. The most impressive and historically valuable graves, containing the bodies of city mayors, industrialists, and activists of Biała, are situated in the arcaded galleries and along the cemetery walls.

The site is accessible. The cemetery is open every day.
