Water tower

industrial architecture Biała

Address
Biała, Wodna

Location
woj. opolskie, pow. prudnicki, gm. Biała - miasto

Structures of the old water supply systems from the pre-industrialization period are now a rarity.

The Renaissance tower in Biała near Prudnik is among the oldest water towers in Poland. It is only predated by the tower in Głogówek of 1567. After renovation, it was opened to the public.

History

The tower was built in 1606 to supply the local castle owned by Count Jerzy Prószkowski. Water was supplied via a system of wooden pipes and other equipment. It was operative until the acquisition of the property by the municipality and the development of the urban waterworks in the first half of the 19th century. In 2011 the tower was renovated and converted to accommodate tourist traffic.

Description

The brick tower stands east of the castle; it is built on a square plan. The three-storey structure with a blind biforate window in the front façade features the Renaissance style.

The tower can be accessed after prior arrangement. Information: Municipal Culture Centre in Biała; address: ul. Prudnicka 35, Phone/Fax: +48 77 4387026, e-mail: info@gckbiala.pl.
