Manor house

manor house Bęćkowo

Address
Bęćkowo, 35

Location
woj. podlaskie, pow. grajewski, gm. Szczuczyn - obszar wiejski

One of the few late baroque manor houses in this part of the country, preserved despite a political attempt to remove it from the Polish landscape.

A unique and well-balanced body of the building without an analogy in the Podlaskie cultural environment.

History

The earliest mentions of the village of Bęćkowo date back to the 15th century. They were connected to the families of Szczukowie, Karwowscy and Klimontowiczowie, among others. The manor house was probably erected between 1752 and 1760, when the village of Bęćkowo was owned by eminent jurist and Member of Parliament Paweł Karwowski. In the early 19th century the Klimontowiczowie family took over the ownership of the asset. The manor house was surrounded by a garden and farm buildings. It underwent alterations during the late 19th century and early 20th century. The building was destroyed during the Second World War. After 1945, the farmland was parcelled out; the Commune Agricultural School premises were planned to be located in the area of the manor complex. The school has never been established, but the Agricultural Production Cooperative was founded instead. In 1958, the effort was made to reconstruct and revitalize the manor house. After completion of the work, the building housed a primary school with a dwelling for the school head. The manor house is now private property and is not in use. The remains of a garden in Bęćkowo are also included in the register of monuments of the Podlaskie Voivodeship.

Description

The manor house is situated in the central part of the complex (with a forecourt located to the south of the manor house, and a park to the north). The body of the building has a late baroque character. The monument was built on a rectangular floor plan, with two sunken porticoes on low, thick columns connected by basket arches, with a high, hipped mansard roof. It is built of brick and plastered. The building is of one storey with a residential garret on the axis and of two storeys from the front. It was designed with longitudinal seven-axis facades with a three-axis garret crowned with a gable (with the facade facing the garden crowned with a triangular gable, and the front facade with fault slopes and a truncated top), and three-axis side facades. The manor house features a three-bay interior layout, with a hall separating the rooms and a drawing room on the axis.

The structure can be viewed from the outside.
