The earthen mound/barrow (site no. 1)

sepulchral site Barbarówka

Address
Barbarówka

Location
woj. lubelskie, pow. chełmski, gm. Dorohusk

An example of one of the best-preserved early medieval earthen burial mounds; due to the lack of archaeological excavation research, it is also considered as the possible site where a number of insurgents were buried in 1863.

Location and description

The earthen barrow known locally as the “insurgents’ burial mound” is located at the western edge of the village of Barbarówka, about 250 metres away from the village proper, near the boundary with the Puszki colony, on the right hand side of the road leading to the village where the road itself and another, unpaved road leading through the fields meet.

The barrow is clearly discernible in the surrounding terrain. The area of the site is approximately 0.04 hectares. The height of the preserved structure is ca. 1.5 metres. At the top of the mound stands a memorial plaque with an inscription which reads: “Barbarówka - The burial place of the insurgents of 1863. Early medieval burial mound - archaeological site”. Further excavation research is necessary in order to make a precise determination as to the site’s chronology. Today, the site remains disused, overgrown with bushes and a few trees. Due to deep tillage, the northern section of the site has sustained damage.

History

The earthen mound or barrow is now believed to be an early medieval structure which may also have possible links to the January Uprising of 1863.

Condition and results of archaeological research

The site has not been subject to excavations. Surface surveys of the site within the framework of the ‘Archaeological Picture of Poland’ project were carried out by Bogdan Okupny in 1984.

Unlimited access to the historic structure. The burial mound is clearly visible from the public road and the unpaved path leading through the fields.
